SCRTD Expands Mobility Across Southern New Mexico with Low-Floor Frontrunner

As South-Central Regional Transit District (SCRTD) celebrates 10 years of connecting communities across southern New Mexico, the agency continues to expand its regional mobility mission through strategic investments in vehicles, routes, and accessible transportation services.

A key part of that investment is the deployment of four Frontrunner low-floor transit buses operating on two important corridors: the Blue Route in Sierra County and the Magenta Route serving Las Cruces and the rapidly growing East Mesa area. Together, these routes showcase SCRTD’s commitment to improving transportation access in both rural and urban communities while connecting residents to healthcare, education, employment, shopping, and essential services.

Over the past decade, SCRTD has grown from a fleet of just five buses to nearly 40 vehicles serving communities throughout multiple counties in southern New Mexico. The Blue Route has become a vital lifeline for residents in Sierra County, providing dependable transportation in an area that historically had limited public transit options. Meanwhile, the Magenta Route supports growth and economic development in Las Cruces by linking rural neighborhoods with major destinations, including New Mexico State University, hospitals, community colleges, retail centers, and the city’s downtown transit hub.

SCRTD leaders, riders, and drivers have praised the Frontrunner buses for their modern appearance, accessibility features, passenger comfort, and operational reliability. The low-floor design and easy-to-use ramps have been especially beneficial for seniors and first-time transit users, helping create a safer and more welcoming rider experience. According to SCRTD, ridership on both corridors has continued to grow since the vehicles were introduced.

Looking ahead, the district is exploring future paratransit and microtransit opportunities while considering additional Frontrunner vehicle purchases as part of its long-term vision for a modern, connected regional transit system.
